2022-2023 Kindergarten Education Program: School-Based Learning Activities on Chinese Culture

2022-2023 Kindergarten Education Program:
School-Based Learning Activities on Chinese Culture

Activity Introduction

During the project, teachers noticed that children showed great interest in the Chinese Yum Cha culture.

After discussion between teachers and children, they decided to explore the topic “Chinese Food Culture – The Big Tea House” together, investigating dim sum ingredients and how they are made, as well as the people, things, and objects found in a tea house.

Finally, the children transformed the school lobby into a tea house, setting up Chinese tableware, tea sets, models of various dim sum, dim sum order cards, dim sum trolleys, and more.

The children also discussed with their peers and chose roles they liked to play, such as manager, waiter, dim sum chef, cashier, and customer, engaging in role-play of going to Yum Cha and imagining themselves enjoying tea and tasting delicious dim sum in a tea house.

Throughout the whole activity, children experienced Chinese tea-drinking culture, explored how dim sum is made, learned about different kinds of dim sum, the people in a tea house, Chinese tableware, and table manners for Yum Cha. They also learned to use polite language to serve guests, thereby deepening their understanding of Chinese food culture.
